Well, ladies

Well, ladies, every woman on my feed is hanging from a pull-up bar right now. Dead hangs. Ninety seconds. Supposed to decompress your spine, open your shoulders, fix your posture, possibly solve every problem you have ever had. One video I saw said it reverses ten years of desk damage. Cool. Let me just unpack that. 😂

I tried it. Obviously I tried it. I have a bar in my doorway because I am that person, and I hung from it for as long as I could, which was about forty seconds the first time, and here is what I will say: the trend is half right, which is the most dangerous kind of right.

The half that is right: hanging loads your grip, opens your lats, and creates space between your ribs. That rib piece is the part nobody is talking about and it is actually the most useful part. When you sit all day your ribs compress downward and inward.

Your breathing gets shallow not because your lungs are weak but because your rib cage stopped giving them room. A hang reverses that. You can feel it immediately, this opening through the sides of your torso that you did not know was closed.

The half that is wrong: ninety seconds is not a beginner target. It is an ego target. Most women I train cannot hang for thirty seconds on their first try and that is fine because thirty seconds is plenty. Also nobody in these videos mentions grip fatigue, which is real, or shoulder impingement, which is also real if you are just dangling with no engagement. 🔥

Sonia sent me a text about some woman who swims alone in Scotland and I know she wants me to watch it and I will, but I also think cold water swimming without a progression plan is just suffering with a nice view. I said that to her and she sent me back a single 🤍 which is her version of "I heard you and I am ignoring you." I love her but she romanticizes discomfort sometimes and I am the wrong audience for it. We are fine. This is just how we are. 🙄

Anyway. The bar thing. Here is what I actually want you to try, which is not a ninety-second dead hang.

Grip something overhead. A door frame, a bar, a sturdy shelf, anything you can hold onto above your head. Wrap your fingers over it. Press your feet into the floor so you are not fully hanging, just loading. Hold for ten seconds. Breathe out slow and feel your ribs open sideways.

That is it. Ten seconds. You get the rib expansion, the grip work, the lat opening, and none of the shoulder risk. You do not need a pull-up bar. You need a door frame and ten seconds.

I told a client to try this last week (different client, not the pickle jar woman, a new one who sits at a desk ten hours a day and could not reach overhead without her shoulders hiking up to her ears). She texted me after two days and said her breathing felt different. Not bigger. Just wider. That is the ribs. That is the whole thing. 🙌

The trend is not bad. The dosing is bad. Start with ten seconds. If your hands hold and your shoulders feel fine, try twenty. Do not jump to ninety because a woman with 400k followers told you to.

Your ribs want to move. Give them ten seconds and they will.
