Well, ladies
You are eating your meals backwards. Not all of you, but probably most of you. And it is messing with your afternoon more than you realize.
A client sat down with me at lunch on Tuesday. Chicken, rice, big pile of greens on the side. She went for the rice first. Half gone before she touched a single leaf.
She looked at me like I was kidding. "Flip it." Vegetables first. Then the protein. The rice, the bread, the pasta, whatever you have, that goes last.
When carbs hit an empty stomach, blood sugar spikes hard. Then it drops. That drop is the afternoon fog, the snack drawer, the whole "why am I exhausted" loop you thought was just your age.
The vegetables slow everything down. Fiber sits in your stomach and makes whatever comes after it absorb more gradually. Less of a spike, more of a slope. Your body gets time to handle it.
Protein does something similar. Sends a fullness signal before the bread basket gets demolished. Same meal, same plate, less wreckage afterward.
Nobody is telling you to skip the carbs. They stay on the plate. You eat all of it. The order is the only thing that changes.
If you are in perimenopause or past it, this matters more. Estrogen drops, insulin sensitivity shifts, and blood sugar after a meal does not behave the way it used to.
Same lunch you have eaten for a decade. Different reaction now. Your body changed the rules and forgot to tell you about it.
I started flipping my own plate a while back. (Not because I read a study. Because a client called me out for eating my salad last and I realized she was right.)
Afternoon crash got quieter. Stopped reaching for something sweet around three. Same food, same amounts, just a different order on the fork.
Started telling clients to try it. The ones who flipped their plates came back saying the afternoons felt different. Not miraculous. Just steadier.
The research on this is still small and I am not going to pretend it is not. But some studies point that direction, even if the blood sugar numbers are mixed.
Next meal, eat the vegetables first. Protein after that. Then whatever else is on the plate. No willpower required, no new grocery list. Just a different sequence.
Sonia sent me a turmeric latte recipe last week. Swore it would fix the afternoon slump. I made it. Tasted like wet dirt. 🙄 Did absolutely nothing for the crash.
Every client hears me say it. Take a full rest day every week. No training, no bargaining. 😂 Did I take one this week? No. Trained on Sunday and my shoulder has opinions.
Saturday night went long. Good food, good people, a bar we probably stayed at too late. Came home happy. Worth every minute.
My shoulder is still mad. My blood sugar, at least, is cooperating. 🙌
